 Highlights

Physical Education
Students have been participating in an introductory gymnastics activity called Mission Impossible. During this activity, students attempted to pass various obstacles as they took on the role of secret agents.

Locked Room
Students continue to create their Locked Room concepts.  We have specifically been looking at creating engaging grade-level challenges.  You can check out some examples below.

Math
Next week we will be starting a long division.  We encourage you to have your child regularly practice multiplication facts up to 10x10 at home to be successful with this unit.   Please see our “Helpful Links” tab on the side for various resources to help you practice at home.

Social Studies
This week, students took on the role of a fur trader around the early to mid-1500s as part of the Amazing Race Canada. Many early European settlers came to Canada due to the demand in Europe for beaver fur.  “In Europe, beaver fur was used on the robes of kings and queens and other powerful people. By the early 1600s, it was being used to make hats.  Word spread quickly that fur was plentiful in the newly found land.” (Source: Voice of Canada) Many European settlers relied on the help of First Nations people to obtain furs, based on their knowledge of the land and traditional trapping methods. Over time, two rival fur trading companies were established, The Hudson’s Bay Company and The North West Company.  These companies would allow First Nations people to exchange furs for manufactured goods such as knives, kettles, beads, and blankets.

Used Skates
Sandstone MacEwan Community Association has been collecting used skates for kids in the community who cannot afford to skate. If you are a family who would like to receive or who would like to donate skates, please contact info@sandstomemacewan.com.  As well, if you are interested, there is a family willing to do some sharpening and some intro lessons! What a great opportunity!

Friday, June 5th The students are continuing to do an amazing job working through the on-line activities and learning that we have been sending out on a daily basis.  We encourage the students to join us for our weekly help sessions if they are struggling with any concepts or just need any questions answered, and it is always great to see everyone on our weekly Friday Classroom Meet! Highlights Math We have been continuing to add and subtract decimals and we had a review check/in on Thursday. For the next 2 weeks we will be doing measurement topics such as area, perimeter, volume and capacity.  Literacy / Social Studies Students are continuing to learn about Canadian History and the various people and events that shaped Canadian History.  Each Monday we are sending out 4 very important Canadian History Topics with activities and writing tasks to go with each topic.  Please encourage your child to read through these topics and tell you how they have impacted our Canadian Histor

Week of September 16th - September 20th Highlights: Thank you to everyone who stopped by for Parent-Teacher Interviews.  It was a pleasure meeting you! In Math, students continue to grow their understanding of patterns. We began looking at multiplying and dividing by skip counting.  Please see the Useful Links tab to listen to our awesome three times table song.  You will also find various online games to practice multiplication facts. Students have been exploring the elements of art, including line, shape, colour and space by creating their own artworks inspired by Keith Herring’s Action Figure Art. Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring's work grew to popularity from his spontaneous cartoon-like drawings in New York City subways. We have begun discussions about mental health.  We will be focusing our discussions around the film Inside Out.   Students will be brainstorm

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome back! We had a fantastic first week.  I am very excited for the school year.  This week, students participated in a nest building STEAM activity based on the Dr. Suess book Horton Hatches The Egg. We started our Language Arts curriculum by having students write about what they think they will have accomplished 50 years from now.  In art, students are exploring line, shape, form, space, and texture by completing a name art activity.
