November 18th - November 22nd Highlights: Thank you for attending our student led conferences.  Students were very excited to showcase what they have been working on in class. Math - We have begun our unit on multiplication.  Students would benefit from reviewing their basic multiplication facts up to 10x10.  In grade 5, we learn how to multiply a two digit number by a two digit number. Language Arts - Students continue to read and listen to the audiobook version of The City of Ember. Students should have read or listened to up to chapter 6 by next week. The audio version, as well as the comprehension questions, are shared with them on Google drive. Science - Our student teachers, Mr. Bernabei and Ms. Miller have been leading the students through a ‘create a creature’ project based on a specific wetland habitat.  We will be having a Wetland test next week, so a study guide has been shared with students on Google drive. November 11th - November 15th

November 11th - 15th Highlights: Student Teachers - We welcomed Ms. Maxwell, Ms. Trembley, Mr. Bernabei, and Ms. Miller to our team. They are with us until Friday, December 14th and will then return in February to finish their practicums here at Simons Valley School. Math - Students completed their third Number Sense quiz this week. It covered rounding, and estimating sums and differences. All 3 unit quizzes were handed back for students to study over the weekend. There will be a unit test on Monday that will cover rounding, estimating sums and differences, addition and subtraction, and place value. Science - Students worked on their wetland riddles based on their chosen wetland creature or plant using Google Slides.  Social - Students continued to work on the Arctic region during our Amazing Race across Canada. After the Arctic, we will move on to the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands region.  Reminders: Student-Led Conferen

November 4th - November 8th Highlights: Art- This week the students got to place their handprints on the school mural created by Ryan Willert.  The mural will be presented to the parents by an elder on November 28th during an evening celebration.  More details to follow next week. Math- We are continuing to work through our Number Sense Unit.  We have completed our addition and subtraction and are currently working on rounding numbers to the tens, hundreds and thousands place.  We had an addition and subtraction quiz on Monday which was handed back to the students this week.  Please check their backpacks for these quizzes. Science- The students are beginning to study specific wetland animals, insects, birds and plants.  They have been working on creating a wetland riddle with rhymes and facts about their specific wetland animal. Our next step is to create an imaginative creature that has specific behavioural and structural adaptations. Social- The Amazing Race continues

October 28th - November 1st

October 28th - November 1st Highlights: Thank-You to all the families who participated in our Pumpkinella event.  The students toured all the pumpkins today and they looked fantastic! Math In math, we have continued to work on multi-digit addition and subtraction, including solving word problems related to these.  We will be having further review on Monday and then a quiz on these concepts on Tuesday. Science We have been studying wetland adaptations and are doing a couple of small projects that will involve applying this knowledge. Social In social, we have begun The Amazing Race across Canada.  Most students are finished the Atlantic Region.  We are moving onto the Arctic region next week. We will have a social quiz on the Cordillera, Interior Plains and Great Lakes St. Lawrence regions (on Monday).
