Week of September 23rd - September 27th

Highlights:

 We braved the cold on Thursday and had an amazing field trip to the Foothills Athletic Park.  The kids participated in relay races, 300m and 60m races, long jump and ball throw.  On Friday, we had a wrap-up assembly and acknowledged the students who placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in each event.

On Friday, we showed our support for Terry Fox and ran in the rain, wind and snow. The students participated in an assembly before the run. If we reached our goal of $1400.00, then Mrs. Kruger will be dying her hair pink for Monday.  We will keep you posted on our final fundraising total.

We have handed back both quizzes that were given during our math unit on patterns. Students were encouraged to take them and their JUMP Math book home to study and review over the weekend. On Monday, students will be given their final test on patterns and then we will be moving on to place value.

In Social Studies, students have been exploring the map of Canada by identifying the 10 provinces and 3 territories as well as the capital city for each. We have also been looking at the 6 regions of Canada.  In the coming weeks, students will be exploring the regions by participating in The Amazing Race Canada.

Reminders:

-Our big box cards fundraiser ends on Monday, September 30th. Please return forms and payment or the box of cards to the school on Monday. 

-Our Outdoor School Field Trip (June 1st-4th) is now available for payment online.  A fee of 303.00 can be paid online (monthly installments are also accepted) through your Power School account.  We will, of course, accept other forms of payment, but the online accounts are the easiest way to process the payment.

-No School on October 11th or 14th

Friday, June 5th The students are continuing to do an amazing job working through the on-line activities and learning that we have been sending out on a daily basis.  We encourage the students to join us for our weekly help sessions if they are struggling with any concepts or just need any questions answered, and it is always great to see everyone on our weekly Friday Classroom Meet! Highlights Math We have been continuing to add and subtract decimals and we had a review check/in on Thursday. For the next 2 weeks we will be doing measurement topics such as area, perimeter, volume and capacity.  Literacy / Social Studies Students are continuing to learn about Canadian History and the various people and events that shaped Canadian History.  Each Monday we are sending out 4 very important Canadian History Topics with activities and writing tasks to go with each topic.  Please encourage your child to read through these topics and tell you how they have impacted our Canadian Histor

Week of September 16th - September 20th Highlights: Thank you to everyone who stopped by for Parent-Teacher Interviews.  It was a pleasure meeting you! In Math, students continue to grow their understanding of patterns. We began looking at multiplying and dividing by skip counting.  Please see the Useful Links tab to listen to our awesome three times table song.  You will also find various online games to practice multiplication facts. Students have been exploring the elements of art, including line, shape, colour and space by creating their own artworks inspired by Keith Herring’s Action Figure Art. Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring's work grew to popularity from his spontaneous cartoon-like drawings in New York City subways. We have begun discussions about mental health.  We will be focusing our discussions around the film Inside Out.   Students will be brainstorm

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome back! We had a fantastic first week.  I am very excited for the school year.  This week, students participated in a nest building STEAM activity based on the Dr. Suess book Horton Hatches The Egg. We started our Language Arts curriculum by having students write about what they think they will have accomplished 50 years from now.  In art, students are exploring line, shape, form, space, and texture by completing a name art activity.
