January 27th - January 31st Highlights Language Arts We have been continuing our Locked Room Challenges for our Locked Room project.  Each group of students will be creating a password protected Powerpoint presentation for their peers to follow, in order to complete each others’ Locked Room. We have also been working on our functional writing skills, practicing writing leads, body paragraphs and ending sentences.  Science We have been studying weather, looking at weather forecasting as well as warm and cold fronts. We will be studying and constructing weather instruments next week. Social Studies We are in the homestretch of the Amazing Race Canada, as students have reached the Cordillera region. The Cordillera as a whole is distinguished by its mountainous landscapes, and it's great variety of climates, soils and vegetation.     Happy New Year! January 20th - January 24th Highlights Physical Education Students have been participating in an introductory gymnastics activity called Mission Impossible. During this activity, students attempted to pass various obstacles as they took on the role of secret agents. Locked Room Students continue to create their Locked Room concepts.  We have specifically been looking at creating engaging grade-level challenges.  You can check out some examples below. Math Next week we will be starting a long division.  We encourage you to have your child regularly practice multiplication facts up to 10x10 at home to be successful with this unit.   Please see our “Helpful Links” tab on the side for various resources to help you practice at home. Social Studies This week, students took on the role of a fur trader around the early to mid-1500s as part of the Amazing Race Canada. January 13th - January 17th Highlights We survived the coldest week of the year! The kids did amazing with being inside for the whole week for indoor recess and lunch. Our interdisciplinary project on the Locked Room continues!  We have been involved in at least 1 teacher-created,  interactive, on-line Locked Rooms, to give the kids examples of what they will be creating in the next month or so. The students have picked a theme for their Locked Room, developed a backstory about their theme and have all started to create a digit or poster to advertise their Locked Room. (Students are working in teams of 3 for this project.)  In Math, we have started our division unit.  We have been dividing groups up equally and looking at word problems where they need to decide what is being divided up, how many groups (sets) there are and how many in each set.  The students have also been looking at division families and how our multiplication facts help us with our division facts.  Please co

Highlights: Welcome back!  We hope you have a wonderful and relaxing holiday. In Math, we are wrapping up our unit on multiplication.  We will be having a multiplication quiz on Tuesday.  Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your child.  Over the next few months, students will be creating their very own escape room experiences. This interdisciplinary project will see students creating a backstory for their escape room, soundscape, advertisements, as well as various curriculum based challenges for their peers to solve.  The Locked Room will be supporting this project by offering free tickets to the group with the best concept. Students have started out next Science Unit of Weather.  We started off  our unit by looking at the difference between weather and climate. We will be looking at weather features, instruments, factors as well as extreme weather. Mathletes & SVS Reads We are excited to bring back two programs, Simons Valley Reads and Simons Valley
