Week of October 21st - October 25th Highlights: - Oct 25th - Halloween Hop 6:30 pm -8:30 pm  TONIGHT Science Thank you Weaselhead for your excellent presentation about Wetland Ecosystems.  Students had an opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of insects found in a wetland. They even created their own replica wetlands! Language Arts We have begun a novel study of The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.  Here is a brief preview of what students can expect:   Lina Mayfleet desperately wants to be a messenger,  Instead, she draws the dreaded job of pipeworks laborer, which means she’ll be working in damp tunnels deep underground. Doon Harrow draws messenger - and asks Lina to trade! Doon wants to be underground.  That’s where the generator is, and Doon has ideas about how to fix it.  For as long as anyone can remember, the great lights of Ember have kept the endless darkness at bay.  But now the lights are beginning to flicker… Math In math, stude

Remembrance Day Art Week of October 15th - October 18th Highlights: We are continuing to work through our Number Sense Unit in Math.  We have looked at the concepts of Place Value, Expanded Form, Comparing and Ordering Multi-Digit Numbers and Regrouping.  We had a quiz on Thursday and they will be sent home on Monday. In Science, we are continuing to learn about the Wetlands.  We are exploring different species that live in the wetland and the different adaptations they need to survive.  We will be beginning to create our own wetland creature and write about the different adaptations that it will need to survive. This week students created a Poppy art piece in recognition of Remembrance Day coming up on November 11th.   The Poppy art will be displayed in our classrooms and around the school. Today the Grade 5 were  involved in the Student Vote.  The Grade 6’s came to our classrooms yesterday and told us about all the candidates and what they were promising to do for Canada

 Dragonfly Watercolour Art Week of October 7th - October 11th Happy Thanksgiving The Grade 5 Team hopes that you have a wonderful long weekend and enjoy your weekend with your family and friends. We are thankful to have the opportunity to work with your child every day! Highlights:   Students continued to explore the regions of Canada.  We are exploring each region by looking at the capital cities in each, animals, natural resources, landforms and interesting facts.  We had a quiz on the Canadian Provinces, Territories and their Capital Cities.  Ask your child what their score was. We started our math study of place value.  The students are looking at the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands and hundred thousands columns and will begin to regroup numbers when adding, next week. This week the students had the opportunity to participate in the Buffalo Teachings with Ryan Jason Allan Willert and will continue to work with our Artist in Resident to create a mural

September 30th - October 4th

Week of September 30th -October 4th Highlights: The Division II students have started to get ready for our yearly Drama Production.  Each student has been cast as an actor or placed in a group of their choice (Dance, Choir, Art, or Video Production).  Each Friday they will be working with their chosen groups to get ready for our December Production of “The Show Must Go On”. We have completed our Math Unit on Patterns and Algebra and have passed back the Unit Test.  Please send back the tests with a parent signature once you have reviewed it with your child.  We have started our new unit on Place Value and will be continuing to build on our Math knowledge of number within this unit. Students have begun exploring the six regions of Canada by participating in The Amazing Race: Simons Valley School Edition.  Mayor Naheed Nenshi sent us a special video to help kick off the race.  Check out the video here Simons Valley School is pleased to announce that Ryan Jason Allen Willert
