Highlights:

The Division II students have started to get ready for our yearly Drama Production.  Each student has been cast as an actor or placed in a group of their choice (Dance, Choir, Art, or Video Production).  Each Friday they will be working with their chosen groups to get ready for our December Production of “The Show Must Go On”.

We have completed our Math Unit on Patterns and Algebra and have passed back the Unit Test.  Please send back the tests with a parent signature once you have reviewed it with your child.  We have started our new unit on Place Value and will be continuing to build on our Math knowledge of number within this unit.

Students have begun exploring the six regions of Canada by participating in The Amazing Race: Simons Valley School Edition.  Mayor Naheed Nenshi sent us a special video to help kick off the race.  Check out the video here

Simons Valley School is pleased to announce that Ryan Jason Allen Willert will be working with the staff and students in the role of Artist in Residence starting next week. Ryan is a full-time artist and storyteller born and raised in Southern Alberta.  Although he was brought up in a non-native community, he has since reconnected with his Blackfoot roots (Siksika Nation). Ryan learned the art of black ink drawing from his father Richard (Dicky) Stimson, another well-known Siksika Nation artist. Among the many exhibitions where he has presented his work are the City of Calgary and Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. Ryan will be sharing the Buffalo teachings (including Smudging) with our staff and students and in turn creating a mural in our multipurpose area. Please come hear him speak at the Parent Council meeting Thursday October 10th at 7pm.

We now have the school year's lunches/snacks available to order in our Hot Lunch system. You can go in and order the whole year all at once if you like!  Here is the link to the hot lunches system for your convenience:  https://simonsvalleyelementary.hotlunches.net

Please note below is a list of all the lunches and snacks for the 2019/2020 school year. For all orders the latest you can pay for orders will be the week before the lunch/snack date. The first lunch is coming up on October 17th and if you would like for your child(ren) to participate in this lunch, you need to pay for your order by Thursday, October 10th, 2019.

-If you have not yet returned your big box cards for our fundraiser, please return forms and payment or the box of cards to the school, ASAP.

-Our Outdoor School Field Trip (June 1st-4th) is now available for payment online.  A fee of 303.00 can be paid online (monthly installments are also accepted) through your Power School account.  We will, of course, accept other forms of payment, but the online accounts are the easiest way to process the payment.

Friday, June 5th The students are continuing to do an amazing job working through the on-line activities and learning that we have been sending out on a daily basis.  We encourage the students to join us for our weekly help sessions if they are struggling with any concepts or just need any questions answered, and it is always great to see everyone on our weekly Friday Classroom Meet! Highlights Math We have been continuing to add and subtract decimals and we had a review check/in on Thursday. For the next 2 weeks we will be doing measurement topics such as area, perimeter, volume and capacity.  Literacy / Social Studies Students are continuing to learn about Canadian History and the various people and events that shaped Canadian History.  Each Monday we are sending out 4 very important Canadian History Topics with activities and writing tasks to go with each topic.  Please encourage your child to read through these topics and tell you how they have impacted our Canadian Histor

Week of September 16th - September 20th Highlights: Thank you to everyone who stopped by for Parent-Teacher Interviews.  It was a pleasure meeting you! In Math, students continue to grow their understanding of patterns. We began looking at multiplying and dividing by skip counting.  Please see the Useful Links tab to listen to our awesome three times table song.  You will also find various online games to practice multiplication facts. Students have been exploring the elements of art, including line, shape, colour and space by creating their own artworks inspired by Keith Herring’s Action Figure Art. Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring's work grew to popularity from his spontaneous cartoon-like drawings in New York City subways. We have begun discussions about mental health.  We will be focusing our discussions around the film Inside Out.   Students will be brainstorm

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome back! We had a fantastic first week.  I am very excited for the school year.  This week, students participated in a nest building STEAM activity based on the Dr. Suess book Horton Hatches The Egg. We started our Language Arts curriculum by having students write about what they think they will have accomplished 50 years from now.  In art, students are exploring line, shape, form, space, and texture by completing a name art activity.
