January 13th - January 17th

January 13th - January 17th

Highlights
We survived the coldest week of the year! The kids did amazing with being inside for the whole week for indoor recess and lunch.

Our interdisciplinary project on the Locked Room continues!  We have been involved in at least 1 teacher-created,  interactive, on-line Locked Rooms, to give the kids examples of what they will be creating in the next month or so. The students have picked a theme for their Locked Room, developed a backstory about their theme and have all started to create a digit or poster to advertise their Locked Room. (Students are working in teams of 3 for this project.)

In Math, we have started our division unit.  We have been dividing groups up equally and looking at word problems where they need to decide what is being divided up, how many groups (sets) there are and how many in each set.  The students have also been looking at division families and how our multiplication facts help us with our division facts.  Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts at home with your child.

Our Unit Test on Multiplication was also sent home this week.  Please review it with your child.

In Social Studies, we continue to race across Canada with our Amazing Race challenge.  We are currently looking at the region that we live in which is the Interior Plains Region and we will be moving into the Canadian Shield Region next week.

Science was great this week.  We are studying weather and we definitely had some interesting weather this week to talk about.  Every day we looked at the weather forecast, the windchill, temperatures in different cities and talked about proper dress and safety in this weather.  The cold temperatures also led to some fun extreme cold experiments such as instant freezing of boiling water, freezing soap bubbles, hot chocolate, tea as well as making instant slurpees in the snow!

Reminders

Appropriate Winter Dress
As our weather in Calgary is constantly changing, please ensure that your child has proper winter wear at school.
