Highlights:
Welcome back!  We hope you have a wonderful and relaxing holiday.

In Math, we are wrapping up our unit on multiplication.  We will be having a multiplication quiz on Tuesday.  Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your child. 

Over the next few months, students will be creating their very own escape room experiences. This interdisciplinary project will see students creating a backstory for their escape room, soundscape, advertisements, as well as various curriculum based challenges for their peers to solve.  The Locked Room will be supporting this project by offering free tickets to the group with the best concept.

Students have started out next Science Unit of Weather.  We started off  our unit by looking at the difference between weather and climate. We will be looking at weather features, instruments, factors as well as extreme weather.

Mathletes & SVS Reads

We are excited to bring back two programs, Simons Valley Reads and Simons Valley Mathletes. Both programs were a HUGE success because of volunteers such as you! We are hoping to run an 8 week program of both SVS Reads and Mathletes starting January 28th for 1 hour a week.

Here is a brief description of the two programs (little different from last year) but just as impactful!

SVS Reads
To support our Grade One/ Two/ Three students, we are looking for parent volunteers who would be able to come once a week for an hour and work with two students. Volunteers would work with a student for 20 minutes each practicing high frequency words, sentence work and of course, reading a short story. All of the materials will be provided for you!

SVS Mathletes

The second program, Simons Valley Mathletes is a program designed to help our grade 3 to 6 students develop proficiency in mathematics. The focus this year will be to strengthen basic math facts. With this program, as SVS Reads, we are looking for parent volunteers who would be able to come once a week for an hour and work with two students. Volunteers would work with each student for 20 minutes making numbers, practicing basic math facts and then playing a math game. All of the materials will be provided for you.

Reminders:

Appropriate Winter Dress
As our weather in Calgary is constantly changing, please ensure that your child has proper winter wear at school.

If your child took their indoor shoes home over the break, please help them to bring them back to school.  We continue to practice fire drills during the winter and the students are expected to have shoes on as they cannot stop and put shoes on if the fire bell rings.

Volunteers Needed
The Grade 5’s will all be going to Atco Kitchen in February.  This is a morning field trip where we will be leaving at 9:15 and arriving back around 1:00 - 1:15.  The students will rotate through a series of food stations working through hands-on activities that are tied to the Health curriculum and skills development.  We will be eating our cooking, so only a snack is needed that day.  The cost of the field trip is $18.00 and can be paid online using PowerSchool.  Field Trip forms and more information will be sent home with your child in the next few weeks.

If you are able to volunteer with your child’s class then please let them know as soon as possible as we need to send in groups to Atco within a few weeks.
