 Highlights:
Thank you for attending our student led conferences.  Students were very excited to showcase what they have been working on in class.

Math - We have begun our unit on multiplication.  Students would benefit from reviewing their basic multiplication facts up to 10x10.  In grade 5, we learn how to multiply a two digit number by a two digit number.

Language Arts - Students continue to read and listen to the audiobook version of The City of Ember. Students should have read or listened to up to chapter 6 by next week. The audio version, as well as the comprehension questions, are shared with them on Google drive.

Science - Our student teachers, Mr. Bernabei and Ms. Miller have been leading the students through a ‘create a creature’ project based on a specific wetland habitat. 

We will be having a Wetland test next week, so a study guide has been shared with students on Google drive.

Reminders:

A Night of Gathering and Giving
Come and participate in an evening of gathering and giving at Simons Valley School. This event will start at 6:30 pm and will end at 8:00 pm. At this event, we will have Jess McMann perform a pow wow mash-up for the school, unveil the mural and have it blessed by an elder, as well as participate in various stations throughout the school. We will be making cards for Meals on Wheels, packing birthday gifts for the Calgary Food Bank, designing hampers, and painting rocks to create a pay it forward message.

Calgary Food Bank
From now until December 17th we will be collecting non-perishable food for the Calgary Food Bank.  Foodbank boxes are now placed around the school to accept any and all donations.

Friday, June 5th The students are continuing to do an amazing job working through the on-line activities and learning that we have been sending out on a daily basis.  We encourage the students to join us for our weekly help sessions if they are struggling with any concepts or just need any questions answered, and it is always great to see everyone on our weekly Friday Classroom Meet! Highlights Math We have been continuing to add and subtract decimals and we had a review check/in on Thursday. For the next 2 weeks we will be doing measurement topics such as area, perimeter, volume and capacity.  Literacy / Social Studies Students are continuing to learn about Canadian History and the various people and events that shaped Canadian History.  Each Monday we are sending out 4 very important Canadian History Topics with activities and writing tasks to go with each topic.  Please encourage your child to read through these topics and tell you how they have impacted our Canadian Histor

Week of September 16th - September 20th Highlights: Thank you to everyone who stopped by for Parent-Teacher Interviews.  It was a pleasure meeting you! In Math, students continue to grow their understanding of patterns. We began looking at multiplying and dividing by skip counting.  Please see the Useful Links tab to listen to our awesome three times table song.  You will also find various online games to practice multiplication facts. Students have been exploring the elements of art, including line, shape, colour and space by creating their own artworks inspired by Keith Herring’s Action Figure Art. Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring's work grew to popularity from his spontaneous cartoon-like drawings in New York City subways. We have begun discussions about mental health.  We will be focusing our discussions around the film Inside Out.   Students will be brainstorm

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome back! We had a fantastic first week.  I am very excited for the school year.  This week, students participated in a nest building STEAM activity based on the Dr. Suess book Horton Hatches The Egg. We started our Language Arts curriculum by having students write about what they think they will have accomplished 50 years from now.  In art, students are exploring line, shape, form, space, and texture by completing a name art activity.
