Science
Thank you Weaselhead for your excellent presentation about Wetland Ecosystems.  Students had an opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of insects found in a wetland. They even created their own replica wetlands!

Language Arts
We have begun a novel study of The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.  Here is a brief preview of what students can expect: 

 Lina Mayfleet desperately wants to be a messenger,  Instead, she draws the dreaded job of pipeworks laborer, which means she’ll be working in damp tunnels deep underground. Doon Harrow draws messenger - and asks Lina to trade! Doon wants to be underground.  That’s where the generator is, and Doon has ideas about how to fix it.  For as long as anyone can remember, the great lights of Ember have kept the endless darkness at bay.  But now the lights are beginning to flicker…

Math
In math, students have been reviewing the steps of multi-digit subtraction with regrouping.   Here is an excellent review video by Math Antics if you would like to practice at home:

Artist in Residency
Ryan Willert has been working at our school painting a mural in our Gathering Space.  The following link is a quick video of his artistic process.

Reminders:

Pack In and Pack out!
Starting this year, we have been attempting to reduce our SVS ecological footprint by moving towards a “Pack In and Pack Out” philosophy.  Once a student has eaten their lunch or snack, the packaging of that item will be put back into lunch kits and returned home for recycling. In continuing to support this positive change, please provide a locking baggie for items such as apple cores, yogurt tubes etc. The baggie will be returned home with the student each day for composting at home and then could be added back into the lunch kit for the next day.  Help us make a difference!

SVS Pumpkinella!
Get your family together and join in the fun for SVS's Pumpkinella! Design, carve or dress up a pumpkin to bring for display.  ONLY ONE DISPLAY PER FAMILY!

Bring your pumpkin to the DLC after school on Wednesday, October 30th or the morning of Thursday, October 31st from 8:20-8:40am.

The pumpkin may have a safer journey if they are not brought to school on the bus.  If you could add a tea-light to the center of your pumpkin, it will add to a special effect when placed in the gym.

Classes will tour  the gym throughout the day to enjoy your efforts. Pumpkins MUST be picked up to go home by Thursday between 4:00 and 5:00pm.  Any pumpkins left at school will be composted.

Spelling
Please continue to review our weekly spelling words.  The students are given the new words on Monday and tested on the following Monday so they can have a weekend to study.  The spelling words are posted on Spelling City.  The students have the link shared with them in their gmail and it is on our website link on the blog.

Art
Supplies Needed - Please bring in any unwanted shoe and/or cereal boxes for an upcoming art project.

Friday, June 5th The students are continuing to do an amazing job working through the on-line activities and learning that we have been sending out on a daily basis.  We encourage the students to join us for our weekly help sessions if they are struggling with any concepts or just need any questions answered, and it is always great to see everyone on our weekly Friday Classroom Meet! Highlights Math We have been continuing to add and subtract decimals and we had a review check/in on Thursday. For the next 2 weeks we will be doing measurement topics such as area, perimeter, volume and capacity.  Literacy / Social Studies Students are continuing to learn about Canadian History and the various people and events that shaped Canadian History.  Each Monday we are sending out 4 very important Canadian History Topics with activities and writing tasks to go with each topic.  Please encourage your child to read through these topics and tell you how they have impacted our Canadian Histor

Week of September 16th - September 20th Highlights: Thank you to everyone who stopped by for Parent-Teacher Interviews.  It was a pleasure meeting you! In Math, students continue to grow their understanding of patterns. We began looking at multiplying and dividing by skip counting.  Please see the Useful Links tab to listen to our awesome three times table song.  You will also find various online games to practice multiplication facts. Students have been exploring the elements of art, including line, shape, colour and space by creating their own artworks inspired by Keith Herring’s Action Figure Art. Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring's work grew to popularity from his spontaneous cartoon-like drawings in New York City subways. We have begun discussions about mental health.  We will be focusing our discussions around the film Inside Out.   Students will be brainstorm

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome back! We had a fantastic first week.  I am very excited for the school year.  This week, students participated in a nest building STEAM activity based on the Dr. Suess book Horton Hatches The Egg. We started our Language Arts curriculum by having students write about what they think they will have accomplished 50 years from now.  In art, students are exploring line, shape, form, space, and texture by completing a name art activity.
