February 3rd - February 7th

February 3rd - 7th

Highlights

In Math,  we have continued to work on long division and have started 3 digit by 1 digit division.
Here is a link which your child can use to practice long division. http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me5l/html/Math5.html    user name LA06 password 4105

In Language Arts, the whole school will be writing a second functional writing piece. Within the next week or so all grade 5 students will have written their second news article.  We have been focusing on punctuation when writing, looking at proper capitalization, commas, and end punctuation.  We are also continuing to work on our ‘Locked Room’ challenges for our Locked Room project.  Thank you to those who have brought in shoeboxes for us to use, for later, when we work at constructing our Locked Room dioramas.

We are just finishing up our novel The City of Ember.  We will be watching the movie next week.

In Science, we have been looking at the water cycle and air pressure.  We learned that without the sun and the earth’s atmosphere, we would not have any weather.  The heating of the earth by the sun causes the heating and cooling of the air, which in turn causes moving air. (warming and then rising, followed by cooling and sinking of air.)

In Social Studies, we have just finished or are just finishing up the Cordillera region.  Our students had a lot of fun building and testing their ‘ferry’ boats. We are continuing to talk about the 1st of the 4 Buffalo Teachings, focussing on Taking Responsibility. Next week, we will begin to look at Saying Sorry.

Reminders

The Skate Shack rental skating program will be held on February 10th-12th.  Each division II class will have the opportunity to skate 3 times.  We are in need of parent volunteers to help hand out skates and fit helmets as well as tie up skate laces during these sessions. If interested, please email Mrs. Latham at ajlatham@cbe.ab.ca.

Pink Shirt (anti-bullying) day will be held on Feb. 26th.  Students and teachers are encouraged to wear a pink shirt that day if they have one.

Valentine’s Day
On Tuesday, February 11th ( Baker/Fuller) or Wednesday February 12th ( Hobbs/Koch, SVS students will be participating in a variety of kindness activities and will not be exchanging store-bought or homemade Valentine cards. At this time, we would like to bring full attention to the care and safekeeping of our students.  We ask that you join us in keeping them safe by avoiding sending treats to school as many of the commercial Valentine treats include peanut or peanut by-products in them. Thank you for your support.
