March 16th - 20th

Hello everyone!

First and foremost, we miss you! We hope that you and your family are taking the necessary precautions to stay safe during this unprecedented time.   As we continue to look ahead to what teaching and learning will look like for the remainder of the school year, we wanted to provide you with an update of where we were in the curriculum prior to the cancellation, as well as a few online resources we often use in our classroom.

Stay safe, and we hope to see you soon!

COVID19 Children's Story
If you are looking to have a conversation with your child about COVID19, but are having difficulty finding kid friendly resources, please see the link below.

Personal Belongings
There may be a need for some families to pick up critical personal items such as medication, inhalers, epi-pens, digital devices, etc. from the school before spring break. We are able to facilitate this but are asking families only to do so if it is necessary. All other student belongings will remain safe and available for pick-up when it is safe to do so (date and time to be determined). At this time, we will keep student work at school in order to complete and update important learning assessments. They will be returned to students when it is safe to do so.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Current Units of Study

Math
Students just recently finished and had concept reviews, on Shape, Measurement (and conversion of metric units) as well as Graphing and Data management.

Next in math :   Algebra
Explaining the purpose of the letter variable in a given addition, subtraction, multiplication or division equation with one unknown; e.g., 36 ÷ n = 6
solving a given single-variable equation with the unknown in any of the terms; e.g., n + 2 = 5, 4 + a = 7, 6 = r – 2, 10 = 2c)

We also encourage having your child continue to practice their basic math fluency (adding and subtracting numbers, single digit multiplication facts up to 9x9, single digit division facts) to improve their overall speed and accuracy. Card games and dice rolls (using 3 dice) can be used to practice addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Social Studies: Indigenous Canadian History

Learning about different Indigenous groups and their traditions, stories and customs
Students learned about the Plains People Groups of Canada as well as the West Coast People Groups.

Please note the CBC has produced an excellent documentary about Canada’s history entitled The Story of Us.  All episodes are available for free on YouTube.  However, please note that some of the episodes contain graphic content and scenes of war.  Viewer discretion is advised.

Science

We recently finished our study of weather and students should have brought home a review quiz a couple of weeks ago on this.

We started our unit on Chemistry.  Students have discussed the definition of Chemistry: The study of matter, what it is made up of and how it changes.  The students have also viewed experiments involving evidence of a chemical reaction i.e.( elephant toothpaste - exothermic reaction - heat being given off)

Students learned about the 3 main states of matter on Earth, liquids, solids and gases and made notes on each of them.
They also learned about evidence of a chemical reaction - gas being produced, heat being given off or lost, an odour being produced, change in colour.

Students also learned about the difference between heterogeneous (can see the different parts)  i.e. fruit salad  and homogeneous mixtures (can’t see individual parts)  i.e. lemonade.

Curriculum concepts still needed to be looked at:
-surface tension, emulsion, making crystals, pH testing, and density.

Poetry
Students learned about a variety of literary devices and practiced looking for them in poems as well as music lyrics.  They also learned about and wrote their own Haiku and Concrete poems.

Read Aloud
Students have been reading the story Among the Hidden.  You may be able to find it on-line or on the Public Library on-line resources.  As we read aloud the students are asked to think about the setting and character traits as well as gather evidence for their thoughts about the story. As we continue to read, students would have been tasked with explaining and showing evidence of how the main character in their story changed throughout the book as well as examining the reason why the character changed.

Useful Links
The following are links to websites we use in our classroom.  Students have classroom accounts to most of these websites that we, as teachers, can adjust based on what we learn in our grade five curriculum.
